Job Description:

My client is an international investor, developer and asset manager in the renewable energy space and are currently looking to hire a senior lawyer to head their Legal Team in Dubai HQ. With an extensive portfolio of projects booked for 2022 and further, this is a great role for someone seeking growth, challenge and a chance to shine at leadership level.
The Chief Legal Counsel is responsible for the legal affairs of the entire organization and is the primary person responsible for managing legal issues faced by the Group globally.
Working closely with the management team, colleagues and outside counsels, the Chief Legal Counsel manages contract and regulatory compliance, helps develop and implement policies and procedures, provides research on and coordination of establishing operations in new jurisdictions, ensures compliance with the organization’s governing structures, advises on employment issues, takes lead in identifying and addressing potential legal issues and risks for current activities, operations and strategic initiatives and manages litigation.

The Chief Legal Counsel reports to the Chief Executive Officer and supervises the Legal Department staff.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Provide legal representation to the Organization, support the work of the Organization and manage the full range of legal strategies and responsibilities for the Group legal entities in all jurisdictions

  • Set the strategy and goals for the Legal team in alignment with the larger organizational goals

  • Lead complex legal projects that span legal, business, and functional boundaries (e.g., cross geographies, subject matter areas, jurisdictions, organizations and business models)

  • Provide counsel to staff in all departments on a variety of complex issues. Identify, research, and analyze legal issues that affect the Organization and its activities at the local and international levels associated with the Organization’s activities, ongoing operations, and strategic initiatives.

  • Supervise Legal Department staff

  • Develop and manage the legal department budget

  • Special projects and other duties, as assigned

  • Manage external counsels and stakeholders

Education/Experience Required:

To be considered for this position, candidates should meet the following criteria:

Candidates should be Common Law Qualified in one of the following jurisdictions: UK/AUS/USA/NZ. 

Minimum of 10 years of experience including significant professional experience as a projects lawyer/project finance lawyer (MEA experience Essential)

Previous experience of working as in-house counsel for other energy companies

Experience in solar/wind projects in emerging markets and/or mature markets

Experience in project finance and working with financial institutions

Experience in M&As, JDAs, SPAs, SHAs, etc

Experience advising senior management of complex, international organizations

Prior success building relationships and communicating with diverse groups of people

Demonstrable legal analytical skills, general business acumen and expertise in several of the core areas of work listed below:


Compliance

Renewable Energy Projects Contract review (PPAs, Cas, IAs, Grid Connection Agreements, EPC, O&M, etc)

Employment law

Corporate governance

Strong project management skills with attention to detail and accuracy

Strong teamwork and client service skills; experience exercising influence and managing change while having an open and inclusive tone; solution-oriented

Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization

Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to work through challenging situations
